At the head of the French Tech mission, the administration responsible for supporting the ecosystem of French start-ups, since October 2024, Julie Huguet, the successor to Clara Chappaz, appointed Minister Delegate in charge of Artificial Intelligence and Digital , does not arrive at this position at the best time. While fundraising by young French start-ups had seen continuous growth until 2022, reaching a record of 13.5 billion euros, private financing has continued to decline since then. Several flagship companies in the sector are seeing their star fade, like Ynsect, Devialet, or even Klaxoon, in the process of being bought by the American Wrike.
The latest EY barometer of venture capital in France, published on January 13, confirms this slowdown. In 2024, the amount of fundraising in France stood at only 7.8 billion euros (− 7% compared to 2023) with a second half (3.5 billion, − 14%) significantly weaker than the first (4.3 billion).
Certainly, the slowdown is limited compared to the 38% decline observed between 2022 and 2023, but the rebound that observers expected is not there. The number of operations, however, remains stable with 72 recorded in 2024 compared to 715 the previous year, a sign of an ecosystem which is not sluggish.
