While Sony recently released the PS5 Pro recently and Nintendo unveiled its Nintendo Switch 2 last week, we discovered today that the PS6 could arrive sooner than expected.

The PS6 could be released as early as 2027!

According to KeplerL2, a renowned insider to whom we already owe the specifications of the PS5 Pro well before its announcement, Sony's next-gen console could be released as early as 2027. In a post on the NeoGaf forum, he indicates that the PlayStation 6 is already “fully designed and in the pre-silicon validation phase.”

If this term doesn't mean anything to you, the “pre-silicon” phase is a key stage during which engineers finalize the design and validate the theoretical performance of a chip before launching the physical manufacturing of the first prototype.

KeplerL2 indicates that the A0 tape-out process (the physical manufacturing of the first iteration of the system chip) would be planned for this end of the year, and that there is generally two years between the A0 tape-out (A0 corresponding to a first prototype which has not yet undergone revisions) and the release of PlayStation consoles, thus suggesting a release of the PS6 for 2027.

This would be a logical date for the arrival of a new generation, since the PS4 was launched in 2013, seven years after the PS3, and the PS5 seven years after the PS4, in 2020. Remember also that Sony declared in February 2024 that the PS5 was in the “second half of its life cycle”, which coincides with a release of the PS6 as early as 2027.

A new chip still with AMD

As we know, Sony and AMD are major partners in the design of the PS6. In response to a Neogaf member stating that using a Zen 6 CPU would be a huge leap from the current Zen 2, Kepler responded that the PS6 GPU would be a “variant of the gfx13”, a processor formerly known as RDNA 5 and now called UDNA, without knowing its size.

On the forum of the Chinese site chiphell.com, specializing in tech, a user named zhangzhonghao indicates for his part that the next Sony console would use AMD's 3D V-Cache technology as a bonus. Already used on the brand's most efficient gaming processors, it can considerably increase performance, which obviously suggests a big power gap with the current generation.

If KeplerL2 has already proven its reliability on several occasions, we of course remain cautious about the information put forward on the various forums.

Note that if the launch of a new generation from 2027 seems to be taking shape for Sony, Microsoft could release its next-gen console in 2026 with the “Xbox Prime”, while documents leaked at the time of the acquisition of Activision suggested a launch in 2028.

As always, don't hesitate to give us your opinion on the subject. While the current generation is regularly described as disappointing by many players and technology advances at breakneck speed, we could be entitled to brand new consoles from next year, hoping that games exploiting the machines will this time be at the meeting.
