Coaticook is preparing for the possible massive arrival of illegal migrants from the United States

We have no choice but to watch this. Today, eyes will be on Washington to see what happensindicates the elected official of the locality located around fifteen kilometers from the American border. The swearing-in ceremony (new window) of the 47th leader of the United States is scheduled around noon live from the Capitol.

Preparations are underway ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in the Capitol rotunda. For the first time since 1985, the event is taking place indoors due to the polar cold, far from the Republican’s supporters, who will be gathered in a 20,000-seat amphitheater.

A senior official in the new administration of Donald Trump, Tom Homan, indicated Friday on the Fox News channel that mass arrests (new window) of illegal migrants will take place from Tuesday. Hundreds of police officers will be deployed in Chicago in particular. The new American president has made the expulsion of millions of undocumented immigrants a key electoral promise and intends to carry it out quickly.

In a speech delivered on Sunday (new window)Donald Trump has effectively underlined his desire to act at unprecedented speed and force to put an end to what he calls the invasion at the borders.

In this context, several migrants could decide to leave the country to escape reprisals. Coaticook is preparing for a possible large flow of migrants without status, like other Estrie towns a few steps from our southern neighbors. Simon Madore is asking residents to report if they see people crossing the border. We ask citizens to be very attentive, to watch what is happening.

Especially since there are several illegal crossing points in the municipality. We have Wallace Lake which crosses the border into Canada and the United States. We have plenty of wood lines that people can cross illegally. We ask citizens to be on the lookout for this, to watch what is happening. If there is something wrong, call the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Sûreté du Québec to take stock of the situation.

The elected official wants the federal government to intensify the police presence. We ask them to strengthen the workforce a little bit. Gendarmerie Royale du CanadaGRC and the Sûreté du Québec.

We are working with fewer personnel from the Sûreté du Québec here, in Coaticook, because things were going very well in our region, continues Simon Madore. But here we ask them: give us back the staff.

The mayor has long been concerned about the arrival of illegal migrants in Coaticook. In November 2023, after the closure of Roxham Road, he met the Gendarmerie Royale du CanadaGRC to report the increased number of illegal crossings (new window) in his town, which he considered a central supply point.
