Haute-Savoie. Prevention, drones, AI… how the Flaine resort is innovating to secure its slopes

“Changing behavior is the key to maintaining a peaceful environment. » These are the words of Frédéric Marion, general director of Grand Massif ski areas (GMDS), two years after the skiing accident which cost the life of a little girl.

Reminder of the facts: on January 15, 2022, Ophélie, 5 years old, took a ski lesson with an instructor from the French Ski School (ESF) on the blue slope “La Serpentine”. She was then violently hit by a skier in his forties who had allegedly adopted excessive speed. The little girl died in the helicopter taking her to the hospital. “This event was a bolt from the blue. We couldn't say to ourselves that we were moved and compassionate and then move on as before,” confides Frédéric Marion, seriousness in his voice as he talks about the human consequences of this tragedy.
