The moments preceding the young woman’s death were punctuated by several symptoms. Lip pain, severe headache, vomiting before falling into a coma. The family watched helplessly as their daughter died without the surgeon appearing. “Seeing this doctor continue his activities is unbearable. One of his patients died“, continues Astrid’s sister to our colleagues at HLN.
The surgeon does not feel guilty
On the surgeon’s side, the man does not feel guilty. “What happened is also extremely painful for me as a surgeon but the guilt is different. I did not commit any medical error“, he explains to our colleagues, before continuing, “What happened to him is very rare, but it can happen. This is not a necessary medical intervention as in the case of cancer for example, but a voluntary aesthetic injection which can lead to possible complications. If you prick with a needle, you can end up in the veins. This is not a medical error, but a complication. I’m really sorry, but there was nothing I could do about it. This can happen to the most specialized expert.“
The family had initiated proceedings against the surgeon which the court dismissed. The victim’s sister wants “the doctor to take responsibility for his actions”.
