The Walloon Minister of the Environment, Yves Coppieters (Les Engagés), reiterated that the implementation of a deposit on cans and plastic bottles was not planned at this time. However, Europe could change the situation.
“The government roadmap does not include the proposed deposit on cans and plastic bottles. It is therefore not currently planned to start its implementation“, repeated the Walloon Minister of the Environment, Yves Coppieters, on Wednesday, in a plenary session of the Walloon parliament.
“A waste when we were so close to the goal during the previous legislature“, regretted the socialist deputy Jean-Pierre Lepine who questioned him on the subject.
“However, I must point out that Europe is also moving forward and at the end of 2024, the Council of the European Union formally approved the European ‘packaging’ Regulation which includes several measures, such as the reduction of single-use plastic packaging, the integration of eco-design and development of deposit systems“, continued Yves Coppieters.
“This European regulation will place member states, including Belgium, in front of their obligations. We will have until June 2026 to consider its transposition“, he added, ensuring that he will continue to inform his colleagues of both European and national recommendations in this area. “And I hope that little by little, we can move towards a common strategy“, concluded the minister.
