Even today, the air is polluted in Brittany. In Rennes, Saint-Malo, Vannes and Lorient, its quality is even considered “poor” by the independent monitoring body Air Breizh, whose data can be consulted online.
Air quality “very poor” in Rennes on Wednesday
This episode of fine particle pollution (especially PM 2.5) which began last weekend, will intensify tomorrow, Wednesday January 15, 2025, in the east of the region.
Saint-Brieuc will, in turn, turn red and Rennes will turn “purple”, i.e. air quality deemed “very poor”.
Immediate consequence of this episode of air pollution: an alert procedure is triggered in Ille-et-Vilaine.
90 km/h on the four lanes
It will result, from Wednesday January 15, 2025 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., in a reduction of 20 km/h in the maximum speed authorized on the entire road and motorway network of the department.
The speed thus increases from 130 to 110 km/h on motorways and from 110 to 90 km/h on expressways.
-“Speed checks will be carried out on the axes concerned,” announces the prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine.
State services have also issued several health recommendations (read here), particularly for vulnerable people.
Blame it on vehicles and chimneys
This intense episode of air pollution is expected to continue at least until the end of the week, with a stagnant air mass, cold weather and an anticyclone that persist.
According to the prefecture, it is attributable to “the combination of favorable weather conditions and the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere due to fine particles coming in particular from old open fireplaces and still significant emissions from road transport “.
It is estimated that air pollution prematurely kills around 2,000 people in Brittany each year.
