A magical evening in Essaouira to celebrate the Amazigh – Mafrique New Year

The city of Essaouira vibrated on Tuesday to the rhythm of a magical evening, organized in celebration of Id Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year 2975.

This colorful ceremony took place in the presence of the governor of the province of Essaouira, Adil El Maliki, presidents of the municipal and provincial councils, heads of external services, elected officials, representatives of local and security authorities. , as well as civil society actors and other personalities.

Thus, the evening began with an artistic parade at Place Moulay El Hassan, where local folklore troupes captivated the public with dances and songs drawing on Amazigh culture, thus offering a vibrant overview of the richness and singularity of the Souiri Amazigh heritage.

A stage set up at the Sqala du Port, one of the architectural emblems of the Cité des Alizés, then hosted a series of musical shows featuring local artists, who fervently shared pieces celebrating the beauty of the Amazigh language and traditions.

In a speech for the occasion, Mr. El Maliki underlined the importance of celebrating Id Yennayer as a symbol of Amazigh identity and the cultural diversity which characterizes the Kingdom, also welcoming the efforts of the various actors to make this event a resounding success and, therefore, strengthen the cultural and tourist attractiveness of Essaouira.

For his part, the president of the Provincial Tourism Council (CPT), Redwane Khanne, emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Amazigh traditions, “essential pillar of the history and cultural diversity of Essaouira”also welcoming the exceptional performance of the Pearl of the Atlantic which “reaches a historic threshold in 2024 by welcoming more than a million tourists”.

Furthermore, this evening was punctuated by a tribute paid to several local personalities from the artistic, cultural, educational, associative and sporting fields, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the influence of the province and the promotion of Amazigh culture.

Initiated by the CPT, in partnership with the Provincial Directorate of Culture and the Essaouira Local Development Company Culture, Arts and Heritage (SDL. ECAP), this cultural event with a strong symbolic charge aimed to strengthen intercultural dialogue and promote values of coexistence, tolerance and rapprochement, which make up the DNA of Essaouira, a city listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
