Maine-et-Loire. Weather for Tuesday January 14, 2025… and a notable event!
It was on January 14, 1506 that the masterful ancient statue of the Group of Laocoon was discovered near the Baths of Trajan, in Rome, very close to the former house of Nero, the one who had the city burned down during his reign. This sculpture dates from 40 BC, probably made on the island of Rhodes.
The whole represents the Trojan priest Laocoon and his sons, prey to snakes emerging from the water. This episode refers to ancient epics, notably theneed by Virgil, who depicts the man as the one who warned the Trojans not to bring in the Horse in which the Greek warriors had hidden themselves.
