As part of its ambition to strengthen food sovereignty, Senegal is intensifying its efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in milk. A key stage of this process was marked by a strategic mission to Uganda, led by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, Dr Mabouba Diagne, and the MASAE teams.
Each year, Senegal imports around 300 million liters of milk, a dependence which slows down the growth of local production. Faced with this challenge, Uganda presents itself as a source of inspiration, with an impressive annual production of 3.5 billion liters of milk. During this mission, Dr Mabouba Diagne spoke with his Ugandan counterpart, Dr Bright, to analyze the keys to this success. Several strategic axes were explored: The development of milk production infrastructure: Uganda has invested massively in modern equipment to improve milk production and processing. Capacity building for breeders: Constant technical and financial support has enabled producers to increase their yield while adopting better breeding practices. Market access and promotion of local products: Uganda has put in place a favorable ecosystem for local milk to be competitive, both nationally and internationally. This collaboration is part of a dynamic of learning and adaptation of proven models to the Senegalese context. The ultimate objective: reduce imports, stimulate the local economy and guarantee quality milk to all Senegalese families.
