This Tuesday evening, hundreds of people gathered at Place des Terreaux to celebrate the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen, which occurred earlier in the day.

At the call of the ultra-left, this “festive aperitif” finally turned into a wild demonstration which led to the arrest of seven individuals.

If these scenes of jubilation took place under the windows of the Town Hall, Grégory Doucet did not come down to mingle with the crowd.

To a few hand-picked journalists the next day, the mayor of explained that “personally, (he) never celebrates the death of anyone, even if that person could experience ostracism from society”.

And welcomed the fact that according to him, there is “no overflows” during the gathering at Place des Terreaux where mortar fireworks took place. However, the Town Hall was sprayed with anti-fascist slogans.

But, unlike the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau in particular, the environmentalist councilor did not condemn those who shouted their happiness at seeing the founder of the National Front pass the weapon to the left and even said “understand that there are people who want to celebrate”.

Grégory Doucet then tackled Jean-Marie Le Pen, “promoter of racism and anti-Semitism. An opponent of the French Republic”.
