The new barometer makes it possible to assess Morocco’s progress and strengthen its international influence, but also its place in the global concert of innovative nations.
Morocco is continuing its ambitious strategy aimed at boosting its scientific sector and increasing its international visibility. With this in mind, the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST) recently published a new version of the scientific research barometer, a fundamental statistical tool which makes it possible to draw up a precise inventory of the country’s scientific performance over the last decade.
This barometer, updated in December 2024, covers the period from 2014 to 2024 and offers a detailed analysis of Moroccan contributions in various scientific fields. Among the sectors scrutinized are exact sciences, health sciences and social sciences, the latter having experienced notable growth, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The significant increase in studies in the social sciences demonstrates a rapid adaptation to complex societal issues and new post-pandemic realities.
One of the major characteristics of this barometer is the highlighting of the most productive Moroccan researchers, a rigorous selection based on the number of publications in renowned international scientific journals. This ranking, which distinguishes the 15 most prolific researchers, is based on data provided by platforms such as the globally recognized Scopus, as well as other relevant sources, including information from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO ). This methodological approach makes it possible to accurately reflect the scientific impact of Moroccan researchers on a global scale.
The barometer does not just provide an overview of past achievements. It also constitutes a lever for researchers, academic institutions and political decision-makers, offering them easy access to the most recent statistics on Morocco’s scientific production. This platform, dedicated to the dissemination of data, offers tools intended to improve the international visibility of Moroccan research work, an essential dimension for strengthening the country’s attractiveness in the global scientific field.
Another fundamental aspect of the barometer lies in the importance given to scientific cooperation. According to the CNRST, collaboration between researchers, both at the national and international level, represents a strategic driver for consolidating Morocco’s position in the world of science and innovation. This principle of cooperation has become central to accelerating progress in key areas, both in fundamental and applied research.
