On Saturday, September 14, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook residents off the coast of Fréjus and the Côte d’Azur. The French Central and Seismological Bureau is calling on witnesses to speak out on their site.

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Fréjus, at sea shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. Not far away, tremors were also felt off the Côte d’Azur, in Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Raphaël.

In the aftermath of this natural event, the French Central and Seismological Bureau – National Seismic Monitoring Network needs testimonies and calls on people who felt the tremors to write to it on its website, indicates the prefect of Var in a post published on X.

“This automatically detected event needs to be clarified by analysts. The BCSF is calling on people who felt the earthquake to provide testimony on their site,” the prefecture said.

The prefecture also indicates that analysts have yet to clarify the phenomenon.

“It was impressive”

On social media, some residents reported feeling the ground shake beneath their feet. “It feels weird on the couch,” Françoise confided on Facebook. “One of my bay windows shook, it caught my attention!” added another resident.

“The last time I felt a shock like this was about 10 years ago,” said Marianne, a resident of Toulon.

“It was impressive,” says a resident of Carnoules. “Terrible,” even, for Berangère.

During an earthquake, the Var prefecture reminds that it is advisable to take shelter near a wall, to move away from windows or not to stay near power lines.
