On the morning of Sunday December 29, three migrants died in a shipwreck after trying to reach the Channel by boat.
The French Navy helicopter spotted a victim: a man who died of drowning while trying to reach the beach. Around 6:15 a.m., Sunday December 29, the alert was given: an inflatable boat with around sixty people on board had just capsized. Despite the emergency system, three people drowned45 were rescued and sheltered in a nautical center, most of them in a state of hypothermia. Four migrants were hospitalized in relative emergency.
“It was a group of 50 to 60 people who were supposed to take the boat and there was another group who came on the boat. It created an overload on the boat” says Flore Judet, a volunteer at the migrant hostel association. Associations help transfer migrants to reception areas. Since December 25, the weather conditions have been particularly favorable, leading to an increase in departures and shipwrecks. Despite the dangers, migrants continue to attempt the crossing. The search system to find possible other victims has been lifted.
