Sentenced to the death penalty for almost 20 years in Indonesia, Frenchman Serge Atlaoui is accused of drug trafficking. But a request from France for his repatriation could change that.
A glimmer of hope? The authorities have just requested the transfer of Serge Atlaoui. Sentenced to death for drug trafficking, he could soon be transferred to France after almost twenty years spent in Indonesian prisons. Aged 61, he has continued to proclaim his innocence. “We await confirmation with great joy and some apprehension”confides Me Richard Sedillot, his lawyer.
In 2005, during an anti-drug raid, the artisan welder from Metz was arrested while working in an ecstasy manufacturing laboratory. He said he was recruited to install machinery in what he believed to be an acrylic factory. Serge Atlaoui was paid 8,000 euros per month under the table. According to justice, he was the drug traffickers' chemist. In 2007, he was sentenced to death. According to his lawyer, Serge Atlaoui could arrive in France in a few weeks.
