Author of a great assist, Zakaria El Ouahdi once again stood out against Anderlecht this Sunday. The KRC Genk right-back is one of the stars of the first division almost every week. However, he still cannot be selected with the Red Devils.
El Ouahdi could be useful at a position that is certainly not overly populated. During the last international break, Domenico Tedesco confirmed that the right back was closely monitored. But the national coach, who preferred Joaquin Seys at the time, apparently does not yet consider him as a short-term option.
German ignores El Ouahdi
“We will determine if he is definitely eligible for Belgium, but even if that were the case, I would not have called him now,” he said at the time.
El Ouahdi defended the colors of Morocco in the national youth teams, with which he notably won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games last summer. All the more reason to strike quickly, one might think, but according to Ludo Vandewalle, the Belgian Union thinks otherwise.
According to Vandewalle, there is a reason why the football federation is not really pushing it just yet. “It seems that in his head he has already chosen Morocco,” Het Nieuwsblad’s head of football told Sjotcast.
Huge competition in Morocco
But there, with Achraf Hakimi (PSG) and Noussair Marzaoui (Man Utd), the competition is enormous, which is why a first selection is slow to come.
“That’s why the Federation doesn’t dare to get too involved. They think he will use this as pressure for Morocco to call him quickly,” we read.
“But I would still make an extra effort so that he becomes Red Devil,” Vandewalle nevertheless concludes. A clear message to Tedesco, or his successor, to get to work as quickly as possible.
