It's official: at 73 years old, the former mayor of Dijon and president of Dijon Métropole in Côte-d'Or, has just been appointed by Prime Minister François Bayrou to the Ministry of Territorial Planning and Decentralization.
This is not the first time that François Rebsamen takes on the role of minister. A look back at the life of the man who left his mark on the capital of the Dukes.
A Dijonnais serving the Dijonnais
Born June 25, 1951 in Dijon, François Rebsamen was elected mayor for the first time in 2001, succeeding 30 years of reign of Robert Poujade. He held this position for more than 20 years, interrupted firstly by his time in the Government and a second time for health reasons.
During his mandate, he largely contributed to the transformation of Dijon, with emblematic projects such as the return of the tramway, pedestrianization and modernization of the city center, as well as the creation of the International City of Gastronomy and Wine or the renovation of the old Dauphine shopping center, Dauphine Dijon.
Minister of Labor from 2014 to 2015
François Rebsamen served as Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Dialogue from 2014 to 2015, under the presidency of François Hollande.
During his mandate, François Rebsamen had to face a difficult situation on the employment front.
In June 2014, he presented a plan to combat senior unemployment, aiming in particular to double generation contract aid and strengthen monitoring by Pôle emploi.
In February 2015, he launched measures against long-term unemployment, notably offering free training and places in crèche.
Despite its efforts, unemployment continued to rise, with more than 200,000 additional job seekers registered. This constant increase has considerably affected the perception of his actions, even earning him the unflattering nickname of “unemployment minister” from certain opponents.
Since his departure from the ministry in 2015 for personal reasons, François Rebsamen has continued to play a political rolewhether as president of Dijon Métropole or as president of the National Federation of Socialist and Republican Elected Officials (FNESR). His experience in the fields of workof the local communities and economic development made François Rebsamen the serious candidate to hold the Ministry of Regional Planning and Decentralization.
