The cold streak that has frozen Quebec for two days will be longer than expected.
You are not dreaming: it has been cold everywhere in Quebec in recent days. And this bitter cold is not about to leave us, as this long period of cold weather could be extended for another week.
The temperatures recorded in Montreal on December 20 and 21 were below seasonal norms, and this trend is likely to continue for a few more days. “We have already recorded two days below seasonal norms and we are forecasting seven more days below normal. We can therefore say that it is a long sequence,” says Alexandra Giroux, meteorologist.
A freezing week
Monday and Tuesday will be particularly cold days, especially in the morning. Monday morning, it is on the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean side that the cold will be most present. We expect -24°C in Saguenay with a feeling of -29. Gatineau and Sherbrooke will have a chilly -19°C and Montreal, -16°C.
The Gaspé tip will be the least affected by this cold spell. For example, Gaspé will start the week with a temperature of -9°C.
Context
The cause of this “North Pole-like” cold is an arctic air mass. This one comes from the north of the country and flies over all of Quebec and the provinces which are even further east of Canada.
Over the next seven days, the return of mild weather should occur in the north and west of the country, but the cold will persist for a large part of southern Quebec.
