“Julia’s life is ruined by what happened…” It is Maître Jérôme Zuccarelli, the lawyer for the Italian victims burned by an ethanol lamp on November 27 at Caveau 30, in Cannes, who translates for us the words of Massimo, Julia's father, who is at her bedside in France .
Transported to Toulon hospital and placed in a coma following the incident, the young woman of 35 years old is still unconscious and remains under total sedation. “At one point they reduced the sedation. But she woke up and realized what had happened to her, and she started crying, shaking…”
Many transplants
Of the skin was taken from his legs to try to repair the after-effects of the fire: the young woman suffered several grafts to the neck, hands, thorax, forehead and temples.
Which went well according to the doctors. But his dad remains completely desperate. Breaks down in tears when he talks about Julia, the evening when his daughter's life and his own were turned upside down…
A wounded man released from a coma
Saverio, 56 yearsalso seriously burned and placed in an artificial coma, opened his eyes Thursday evening. “He’s still intubated, he can’t speak, but he must think he’s paralyzed,” explains Maurilio, who came to France to watch over his brother. He underwent two major transplants, but unfortunately they did not take place. “He had an infection, he had a really bad fever…”
Finally, the last wounded person transported to Toulon, Lorenzo, 30 ansremained conscious and underwent four procedures under general anesthesia. “But I don’t know if I will have others or not”he explains.
Physically, Lorenzo seems to be holding up. But morally, it's more complicated. He remembers everything. Of every moment, every sound. Every scream, every detail. “All these images stay in my head. I couldn't sleep for 10 days because I thought about this horror so much.” The hospital gave him sedatives for the night, painkillers for the day.
“There are not only five injured”
For all the witnesses, all those who witnessed the scene, the psychological shock is heavy. Monitoring has also been set up in Italy, with those returning to their country. “There are not only five injured, lance Maurilio. There are also all their families, their friends, affected by this tragedy.”
Families, some of whom have taken temporary accommodation in Toulon and who are also suffering an economic repercussion, “some having given up their jobs”explains the lawyer.
Massimo, Julia's father, Maurilio, Saverio's brother, Lorenzo and his father… all criticize the presence of this ethanol lamp on the table and its misuse. “It is abnormal to have a bomb like this on a table”says Julia’s dad, Massimo. “It's like throwing gasoline on the fire, adds Lorenzo. It’s stupidity.”
“It was burned due to negligence, his dad gets angry. It is not normal to make this type of use of this ethanol lamp, in a city which hosts so many international events. […] Everyone says it's because the terraces aren't closed or something. Everyone just wants to do business, but as a result, my son was burned.”
And Lorenzo also wants to clarify again that “no one pushed the waiter”.
“I am also shocked to have read and heard that someone was complaining about the administrative closure…, relève Maximum. And that no one contacted us to inquire about the state of health of the injured.”
