The municipal council voted unanimously for these new names.

A second urban name for Jean-Marie RAUSCH

After theMetz Arsenalwho adopted the name Jean-Marie RAUSCH last February, Metz continues the memorial gestures in favor of its former mayor by giving his name to a place. The Place de la Préfecture, not far from the Place de la Comédie, was thus designated to pay homage to him who was mayor of Metz (1971-2008), senator of (1974-2001), president of the General Council of Moselle (1979-1982), president of the Lorraine Regional Council (1982-1992), Minister of Foreign Trade (1988-1991), Minister of Posts and Telecommunications (1992), and knight of the Legion of Honor.

The municipal council highlighted its action in favor of culturewith the opening of the Center Pompidou-Metz, but particularly insisted on its role of protector of heritage from Metz. “He restored the beauty of Metz, in particular through these rapid decisions which concerned all the Metz buildings with their renovation, he developed this internal beauty of the city and also contributed to highlighting the urban ecology”, recalled Patrick THIL, deputy mayor in charge of culture and worship.

Jérémy ROQUES, president of the Unis group, agreed: “I remember what he did, but also what he did not do. This refusal of urban projects which under the cover of progress planned to destroy Outre-Seille, to reduce to nothing the heritage of Pontiffroy and the Saint-Jacques islet. A heritage place therefore suits it perfectly.”

A first name for Catherine JACQUAT

Catherine JACQUATteacher of history and geography, treasurer of the Secours populaire de la Moselle, president of the Concert Lorrain, president of the Contemporary Center of Delme and involved with the Regional Contemporary Art Fund, and elected official of the Lorraine Region (1998-2010 ), of which she chaired the “Cultural Affairs, Sports and Tourism” commission for 6 years, is a Messina whose local, social and cultural actionsare now recognized by everyone.

“She always worked in the general interest. Even if we did not always share the same vision, she worked hard to help the people of Messina. Without Catherine Jacquat, there would be no Frac at the Hôtel Saint-Livier. I am one of those who think that the existence of this hard fragment in Metz made it easier to open a Center Pompidou,” explained Charlotte PICARD, member of the UNIS group. She was nevertheless surprised that a place in the Queuleu district, where she worked extensively, was not designated to take her name.

The mayor of Metz François GROSDIDIER, spoke of the desire to iMinimize impact on local residents by avoiding them having to change their address. Place Catherine JACQUAT will only force the Notre-Dame school to change its address, while Place Jean-Marie RAUSCH will lead to a change of address for two buildings: the prefecture and Salle Fabert.

A street or square in Metz should soon be named Caroline AIGLEfirst female French fighter pilot. The Abbé-Pierre garden was renamed last September to now bear the name Marcel REBOURSET, prefect of the liberation. More information by clicking here.
