No more two-wheelers parked illegally on the sidewalks: in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), from now on, there is zero tolerance. “You escape the pound, that’s not bad”says a police officer to a biker who, this time, will only receive a fine of 35 euros: “If I hadn’t come quickly quickly, because I was at work and they told me ‘we’re going to take the scooter’, it would go to the pound,” she testifies in the TF1 news report visible above.

To carry out these operations, the city uses major resources: around ten municipal police officers and pound agents are mobilized daily. Every month, between 300 and 500 two-wheelers are removed. “We did a lot of prevention, we flitted around in certain sectors, specifying that there was going to be verbalization and kidnapping. But that wasn’t enough, so we had to move on to the repression”explains Jean-Louis Stefani, director of the public tranquility unit of the Marseille municipal police.

They say that in Marseille, we create our own place, unfortunately, it’s a bit like everyone’s general functioning

In the city center, incivility is indeed very common. There are two-wheelers right in the middle of the sidewalks, for pedestrians it is often difficult to make their way. “They say that in Marseille, we create our own place, unfortunately, it’s a bit like everyone’s general functioning,” deplores a resident. 15,000 parking spaces exist in Marseille, but for users, it is far from enough. “I’m careful not to get in the way, but for them it’s annoying parking. Instead of tightening the screws, we should perhaps create additional parking lots.” judge a driver. “We should be able to ensure that everyone can park correctly, to be clear,” says a Marseillais.

At the impound lot, vehicles pile up waiting for their owner. For the town hall, it is a question of sharing the public highway. “From now on, we say to the people of Marseille, we have decided on zero tolerance in terms of illegal parking. For us, it is a question of calming down our city center, the people of Marseillaise and the people of Marseillais want it, and therefore we are responding to this demand by multiplying operations”indicates Yannick Ohanessian, deputy mayor (PS) in charge of public peace and security. To combat this scourge, the city is also committed to building new spaces for two-wheelers.
