The Swiss Football League has examined all the LNA/Super League seasons since…1933 to establish a historical ranking of Swiss football. Verdict.
Grasshopper fans are going through difficult times right now. Their team, traveling to Basel this Saturday, is fighting relegation to the Super League and must also play each home match at Letzigrund, the stadium of its historic rival (FCZ). However, it was not always this way. Because GC was a great club in our country, the biggest evenif we are to believe the historic ranking that the Swiss Football League has established.
The League has in fact dissected the results of the 90 previous seasons in the history of the Swiss championship, since the 1933/1934 season and until summer 2023, that is to say just before the recent formula change. In his calculation, each victory in all seasons earns 2 points, a draw 1 point. And here is the podium:
- Grasshopper Club Zürich: 86 seasons at the highest level, 2610 matches and 3151 points
- BSC Young Boys: 64 seasons at the highest level, 2538 matches and 2924 points.
- FC Basel: 80 seasons at the highest level, 2422 matches and 2887 points.

If we update this podium with the results of last season, it changes absolutely nothing in the hierarchy:
- GC: 3179 points
- YB: 2978 points
- FCB: 2923 points
FC Zurich is still 4th with 78 seasons in the LNA/Super League and the first French-speaking country is still Servette FC5th in this historic ranking, also with 78 years spent at the highest level.
Counting last season’s results, we even obtain a top 5 French-speaking region which lists all the matches played by French-speaking teams within the Swiss elite since 1933. Here it is:
- Servette FC: 2324 matches and 2682 points
- Lausanne-Sport: 2260 matches and 2418 points
- FC Sion: 1790 matches and 1788 points
- Neuchâtel-Xamax: 1322 matches and 1371 points
- La Chaux-de-Fonds: 1150 matches and 1108 points

We see that the differences are so significant that it will be several years before one of these five teams gains a rank or loses one. Some will undoubtedly take this ranking as the ultimate proof of the superiority of their team over another, but remember that it does not take into account everything that makes the history of a club: the trophies won.
