Accustomed to taking the shortcut under the Cavée viaduct, in Caen (Calvados), several motorists found themselves trapped in the waters during Tuesday's floods. According to Actu.frdrivers took this road despite the barriers indicating the ban on passing. The Cune firefighters had to intervene to rescue them.
On this road going from Caen to Louvigny and making it possible to avoid traffic jams at the Zénith roundabout, the situation quickly became tense given the rising water levels. Even though local residents are familiar with this shortcut, it almost proved fatal.
Firefighter intervention by boat
The rising waters of the Orne, under the Cavée viaduct, are a recurring phenomenon in winter. But the residents did not seem to want to take into account the ban on passage. And they almost paid the price.
The barriers that had been positioned were removed by motorists, determined to save a few minutes. To help them, firefighters intervened, equipped with a semi-rigid boat. Fortunately, no one was injured. On the other hand, the cars had some mechanical problems, notably due to flooded engines.
