The poor results of Swiss clubs engaged this season on the European scene are causing Switzerland’s decline in the UEFA index. There could soon be negative repercussions.
It has been said in recent weeks that young Swiss footballers are seriously lacking playing time in the Super League and Challenge League. A real scourge for national teams, from the Nati to the under-19s. Now, another threat, closely linked to the UEFA coefficient, hangs over Swiss football, due to the poor results of our clubs on the European scene.
YB has not yet unlocked its Champions League counter and is languishing in last place, before challenging Stuttgart away on Wednesday at 9 p.m. St. Gallen is not doing much better in the Conference League. The Brodeurs are 25th, the first team not qualified for the play-offs. And since they still have to face Guimarães (Thursday, 9 p.m.) and Heidenheim, that is to say tough guys, it is not sure to see them again in the European Cup next spring.
In fact, only Lugano, 8th in the Conference League before meeting Legia Warsaw (Thursday, 6:45 p.m.), manages to stand out this year, after the early eliminations of Servette and FC Zurich.

All of this is of course reflected in the UEFA index ranking. In this exercise alone, Switzerland is currently in 23rd position, behind nations like Armenia, Cyprus and Hungary. Foundations even less solid than those of last season, concluded in 19th place, despite the good performance of the Genevans in the Conference League.
At the time, however, Swiss clubs secured an exciting 12th position at the end of the year, for the simple reason that the UEFA coefficient for national championships is calculated over five years, and not a single season. The Super League teams had then nibbled a place in the ranking and received some advantages: a second ticket in the Europa League for 2025/2026 compared to one in the Conference League, and one less round to play in this same competition, for the winner. of the national cup.
However, these and other valuable gains made in recent years are about to be lost. Because by counting the current season, Switzerland now falls to 17th place in the five-year ranking, ahead of Norway, Austria, the Czech Republic and even Scotland. It is also closely followed by Poland.
As it stands, if the 2024/2025 financial year were to end now, there would be major changes coming in 2026/2027, starting with the loss of one representative (going from five to four qualified clubs). The routes to joining the league stages of the Champions League and Europa League would also be much more complex. While the Swiss champion and the winner of the cup will begin their campaign next year in the play-offs, the last round of the qualifying phase, they risk entering the second round of C1 qualifying in the summer of 2026, as well as in the very first round in C3. This means three and four opponents respectively to defeat to experience a true European adventure the following fall.
This is why Swiss clubs would be well inspired to perform this week in Europe.
This is all the more true for FC Saint-Gall, which is now flirting with 24th qualifying place. However, reaching the knockout phase of the Conference League would offer the Brodeurs and all of Swiss football some welcome points in the UEFA index.
