After the weekend of September 21 to 23, motorists and residents along the motorway thought they would have peace of mind for a few months with the A31. Dir'Est had not planned any other major closures of the A31 motorway before spring 2025 concerning the Autreville viaduct site. Apart from unexpected events such as a truck falling off the motorway and causing a night of interruption, the A31 would therefore remain open.
This will ultimately not be completely the case.
Two nights of closure are still expected, early next week, between Atton and Belleville, on the night of December 16 to 17 in the direction of Metz-Nancy and on the night of December 18 to 19 in the direction of Nancy towards Metz.
“It will not be at the same level as the weekends of cuts,” reassures Guillaume Artis, head of the Dir’Est engineering department. We frequently carry out this type of nighttime outage for maintenance work. »
In mid-December the viaduct will be released
This time, the two nights will be used to reopen the Autreville viaduct in its normal configuration.
“After the last big weekend of shutdown, the viaduct was in a tilting configuration into two lanes on one side of the structure.” That is to say that the vehicles were switching in the opposite direction in the Metz-Nancy direction, but always with two lanes of traffic. “With these nights of cuts, we are dismantling this changeover to restore the configuration of two lanes on each side of the viaduct. »

The operation should have taken place at the end of November, but the site had to face several hazards.
“We were a little late because the weather was not very good. We also had an unpleasant surprise which delayed the work. » It is therefore mid-December that the viaduct will be freed.
“The cuts will take place around 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. A diversion will be put in place via the RD40. But the highway will be open in the other direction of traffic every night. This will allow us to gradually reopen access to the viaduct,” he emphasizes.
Resumption of work in April
Contrary to what may have been announced, the A31 will be open between 3 p.m. and the start of the night. “At 3 p.m., the police will go around the rest areas. The Loisy area will not be able to accommodate vehicles. On the Obrion area side, the police will warn the trucks that stop that they will not be able to leave until the next morning. »
On the morning of December 19, users of the A31 will therefore simply cross the Autreville viaduct with a speed reduction of 90 km/h until the spring. “The Metz-Nancy direction will be in its final configuration. Next year, we will put the same device on a half-apron between April and August. We will carry out the same work done in the Metz-Nancy direction for the other side.”
Who says the same work, says the same number of closures.
