Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the German, Austrian, British, Swedish, Danish, Italian, Norwegian, Dutch and Belgian governments decided to suspend asylum requests from Syrian nationals with immediate effect. Switzerland announced a similar policy change Monday evening. While Vienna was already putting forward the idea of organizing a “repatriation and expulsion program” concerning the latter.
Decisions that asylum specialists and NGOs active in the field immediately denounced as “largely premature”. While the UN High Commissioner for Refugees called for “patience and vigilance” on the question of a return of Syrians to their land of origin.
