The “Big Template”. This is how the route chosen by the State for the construction site is nicknamed. -Turin, this XXL railway line which will connect the two cities. The route decision had to be taken concerning the portion between the town of Rhône and the start of the cross-border tunnel, located at Mont-Cenis, in Savoy.

Several scenarios were on the table, recalls Bleu. In the end, the fastest was chosen.

Faster…and more expensive

According to our colleagues, the route “Large Template” means a passage through tunnels under the mountain ranges of Chartreuse and Belledonne, and therefore an avoidance of valleys. The fastest therefore, but also the most expensive.

The project will cost a total of more than 20 billion euros. More than 150 million have already been allocated “for preliminary project studies which will begin at the beginning of 2025 and will specify the route”, as the regional prefect specifies.

A few weeks ago, Hervé Gaymard, president of the Savoie Departmental Council, even explained that: “More than 64 million euros will be granted by the European Union under the “Mechanism for Interconnection in Europe”. This funding will make it possible to concretely launch studies on the “Large gauge” route of French access, which has garnered the broadest consensus among all the local authorities concerned. »
