My Swiss week
Every Sunday, our columnist monitors Swiss political news. Find his chronicles
“Switzerland is an aging country, lonely but happy!” It is under this striking abbreviation that the magazine of the Organization of the Swiss Abroad presented, last March, the main characteristics of recent national statistics. A happy country, certainly, but an aging one. This despite the new blood of European immigration. Here the population no longer renews itself naturally.
In people’s minds too, Switzerland is a country of old people, ever more conservative, anxious about security issues, for which the outside becomes strange and threatening. Increase in the army budget, tightening of the admission conditions for Ukrainian refugees, elimination of 250 million for international cooperation and polls favorable to the national conservative right, the news of this week is strongly marked by all the characteristics of an aging society.
