It was called “the forest”. There wooden frame not XIII.e century of Notre-Dame de cathedral was reduced to ashes by the fire of April 15, 2019.

Very quickly, a mobilization made it possible to find the trees which would form the new frame of the building. Some of them come from the Ferrières forest (Seine-et-Marne).

58 trees

In all, several hundred trees were needed to manufacture the new framework but also the spire, which was designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Among them, we find fifty-eight oaks which grew in the forest of Ferrières. It was a donation from theÎle-de- Green Spaces Agencyl’AEV.

But be careful, we don't use just any tree to cover Notre-Dame de Paris. “ We chose them according to the criteria of the specifications given by the carpenters. These trees would have been cut down anyway. But instead of ending up in barrels, they will be used to make the framework of the spire of Notre-Dame de Paris. It’s a beautiful destiny! They will survive us, the framework will last more than 1,000 years,” rejoiced in our columns Anne Cabritthen president of the Île-de-France Green Spaces Agency, in September 2021.

And they will experience a certain form of immortality, perched on the roof of the cathedral…
