Flax seeds sold at Carrefour have been recalled throughout France since Wednesday December 4, 2024. According to Consumption reminder these oilseeds would indeed present a risk of contamination with hydrocyanic acid, or hydrogen cyanide. A chemical compound judged “very toxic and dangerous for the environment” by the website of the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
Health risks
In detail, this recall concerns “organic brown flax seeds” from the Carrefour brand sold throughout France since September 27. This product packaged in 250 g cardboard boxes belongs to lot 22129 and has the GTIN code 3560071270742. The minimum durability date written on the packaging is August 31, 2026.
People who have purchased this product are invited to no longer consume it. The government website insists that these flax seeds can be dangerous for your health. Quoted by our colleagues from RMC Conso the Eurofins group of laboratories specifies on its website that such consumption can “be responsible for headaches at low doses” et “block the respiratory metabolism of cells and cause death at high doses”.
A similar reminder in August
Customers have until March 4, 2025 to visit the store and obtain a refund, after which the recall process will end. A telephone number has been set up to answer any questions consumers may have.
Last August, brown flax seeds sold in all Biocoop stores across the country were massively recalled for similar reasons. As a reminder, flax seeds have many nutrients that act favorably on the digestive, immune, cardiac and nervous systems.
