She discovers old broken porcelain dishes in her attic, and sells the lot for 241,000 euros

When you go to your grandmother's house, you like to spend hours rummaging through her interior. Between his dressing room, his kitchen cupboards and his attic, you are constantly on the lookout for real vintage gems. And for good reason… With the emergence of television shows like Deal Doneyou think it is very likely that the latter has hidden treasures. Sometimes, it is when a loved one dies that we also realize the value of their objects.

Indeed, others do not have this approach and prefer to sell as many things as possible to clear out this person's home. This is precisely what Gill Stewart, an Englishwoman whose grandfather had been posted to China during the Boxer Rebellion at the start of the 20th century, wanted to do. As revealed by Dailymailthe latter had wished do the big cleaning in the attic of his home in Benniworth, Lincolnshire. And finally, the box she had inherited from her ancestor turned out to be a real marvel.

While sorting through her attic, Gill Stewart rediscovered an old box filled with vintage crockery. The latter had been given to him by his grandfather
formerly military. But given the state of the porcelain objects, the Anglo-Saxon woman had chosen to part with them. Indeed, over the years, these had been broken. For her, they were therefore good to throw in the trash.

Except here… At the last moment, the woman finally handed over this retro lot to the auction company John Taylors Auctions, located in Louth in England. Inside were more precisely cupsof the
assorted saucers and tea bowls. All these pieces were decorated with Chinese motifs
dating back to a bygone era.

Many connoisseurs rushed to come and see these exceptional pieces in real life. And what a big surprise it was for Gill Stewart when the auction started! Indeed, after the end of the sale, the latter received the sum of 241,000 euros. A sum that goes well beyond everything what she could have imagined. While the Englishwoman was preparing to throw away this batch of vintage tableware, this one finally won the jackpot.

Even though these objects were mostly broken, the professionals present in the auction room saw the
rarity and the potential of these collector’s items. One of the available lots even reached the sum of
59.000 livres sterlingor more than 71,000 euros. A real record!

At what price were the pieces of this set of porcelain tableware estimated?

However, the prices of the porcelain objects put up for sale were not initially that high. Buyers had access to many porcelain utensils. For example, one lot consisted of two cup holders decorated with dragons and “shou” symbols, bearing the mark of the Qianlong Emperor, as well as three plates. The latter was estimated
between 40 and 80 poundsor between 48 and 96 euros. Ultimately, this lot was sold for 35,000 pounds sterling (around 42,200 euros).

The same goes for a set of four Chinese tea bowls with matching saucers, bearing traces of the Tao Kuang reign. These had been glued back together and had some defects. due to prior repair. Despite everything, this lot found a buyer for 26,000 pounds sterling, or 31,360 euros.
