A 100% Gironde nursery. This is the idea that germinated in the mind of Jean-Luc Gleyze, president of the departmental council. And today, it is about to become reality.
Located in Hostens, it will bring together 22 local species : arbutus and holm oak from Verdon-sur-Mer, blood dogwood from Moulon, domestic plum from Bassens, cherry from Sainte-Lucie from Saint-Emilion, wild pear from Sauviac… “The Gironde plant palette is remarkable for its diversity”, underlines – we at the Department.
In Hostens, local seeds and native plants
The first plants, from seeds collected in sensitive natural areas of Gironde, will be planted on Tuesday December 10, 2024, in the morning.
Faced with “the climate emergency and the collapse of biodiversity”, a new source of supply made from local seeds and native plants will see the light of day, in Hostens, a village in the south of Gironde badly hit by the fires of summer 2022.
Ultimately, this nursery should produce 30,000 plants above ground and 5 to 10,000 in the groundwe estimate at the Department.
-Why is this nursery located in Hostens?
The choice of the departmental domain of Hostens Gât-Mort, formerly an industrial site, “was self-evident”, the Department explains.
The reason: these places are home to the largest national forest in the sensitive natural areas of Gironde.
“To limit any artificialization, it is a former industrial site which was chosen to accommodate the departmental nursery, details the departmental council of Gironde. The concrete platform of 5,000 m2 located along the D3 at the exit of the town is the vestige of the cooling water buffer basin of the thermal power station in service from 1932 to 1964. Around the site, the Department owns more than 35,000 m2 of space woodlands completely burned during the summer of 2022.”
Few nurseries of the same type in France
Nowadays, nurseries managed by the Departments are rare. There are only four: three in Occitanie (Aude, Aveyron and Pyrénées-Orientales) and one in the Paris region (Val-de-Marne).
Useful throughout Gironde
What will become of the Hostens plants afterwards? Well, they will be used throughout the territory, from Blaye to Captieux, from the Arcachon basin to Entre-deux-Mers.
This departmental nursery will, in fact, “support planting and renaturation projects spaces for which the Gironde departmental council is responsible (colleges, roadsides, etc.) and for the regeneration of its sensitive natural spaces.”
Responsible production
“The terrible fires of the summer of 2022 have amplified the urgency of providing the Department with an integrated tool,” specifies the Department. The nursery will therefore work on the selection of local species of ecological interest and the identification of collection sites; collecting seeds, particularly in sensitive natural areas; has responsible production of plants adapted to biogeographic conditions and landscapes of the different Gironde territories; planting, monitoring and maintaining young plants. »
The first plants should be available between 2026 and 2027.
