Jean Beaufreton, 59 years old, self-employed worker living in Challans (Vendée), decided, with a friend, to go to Valencia (Spain)help people who have been victims of floods on October 29 and 30 last.

“It was the apocalypse”

“I saw the images on television, I found it shocking. I saw people swimming in the mud, sinking. These are people who lose everything. I wouldn't want that to happen to me. » Seeing these images had a detonating effect.

“I went to see how much a plane ticket cost to go there, I contacted a bodybuilder friend, we decided to go there to help them. » They took a pair of boots, gloves, painter's overalls, a yellow vest to help.

In mid-November, they flew to Spain. He talks about his experience there.

“We arrived in the afternoon, we walked around a bit, we called a taxi, we told him we were coming to help, he dropped us off in Alfafar. We had our boots on, we walked into the streets, and we spoke with the residents. It was impressive, it was the apocalypse. »

His friend, who had seen war zones, “had never seen this. In the shops, we helped to clean the silt. “

“We didn’t speak Spanish, so we made ourselves understood on our phone. The individuals did not really want us to go home, it was mainly the traders who welcomed us.”

“People lack material resources, they help each other a lot, but there aren't enough people. We still saw cars with water in the basement. »
