The relocation of the Amqui ecocentre should be completed by the end of 2024. The project is therefore coming to fruition after many years of work.

Following calls for tenders launched this spring, the MRC of La Matapédia awarded contracts for the relocation of the ecocentre from Rang Saint-Paul to an industrial sector on Rue des Forges, an initiative valued at $2.5 million.

Its implementation will resolve the security issues faced by employees, users and residents of the surrounding area at the current site. The project also aims to increase the processing capacity of materials, the current ecocentre being limited by the size of its facilities.

The new infrastructure is expected to be commissioned by November at the latest.

“This is the conclusion of a long-term project that required a lot of work with elected officials and professionals from our team. We are confident that the new location and new facilities of the Amqui ecocentre will allow us to offer better services to citizens and better accomplish our mission in the treatment of residual materials,” commented the prefect of La Matapédia, Chantale Lavoie.

She added that the elected officials will then look into the situation of the Causapscal and Sayabec ecocentres.

Let us recall that after an initial draft of the project in 2020, the MRC of La Matapédia mandated professionals to develop a concept and an initial budget estimate.

A monitoring committee was set up in 2022 to make revisions and reduce the costs of the project. Its recommendations were accepted by the MRC council in 2023.

The project was adopted in its final form at the beginning of 2024.
