The summer of 2024 is a milestone in Liam Filaine’s career. In mid-July, the young Berruyer will begin his preparation with the Nevers hopefuls, his new team. Then, in mid-August, he will participate in the European Touch Rugby Championship, in Vichy, with the French U20 team.

The young winger of Bourges XV was pleasantly surprised when the staff of the French team called on him to participate, this summer, in the European junior championship. “My first participation in a national gathering dates back to 2022, he explains. Since then, I have stayed in contact with the French team. I was called up for the training courses that followed and I was kept despite the fact that I don’t play much touch with Bourges. This is my last selection in U20 this summer, I will play the competition to the full to aim for the gold medal. ” On this occasion, 28 teams representing fourteen nations will converge on the Vichy omnisports park (Allier) from August 16 to 18.

Liam Filaine discovered touch rugby in Bourges with his brother and his father, Frédéric, a coach at the club. “In the absence of contact, there is a lot of strategy,” says the young man. Individual exploits are rare. Touch helps me in XV with my vision of the game, positioning, passing and XV helps me in touch with speed, runs and individual technique.”

A new stage in Nevers

For now, Liam Filaine is preparing to join the USON espoir team, led by former Berry coach Kévin Thuillier. The other good surprise of his summer. “During my trial week, I gave it my all, but I didn’t expect to receive an offer afterwards,” admits the student in Staps (science and technology of physical and sports activities), specializing in rugby. I always dreamed of joining a training center and, after several failures, I seized this great opportunity.

With Nevers, the collective recovery will begin on July 15 and will continue throughout the summer. It is during his vacation week that he will play the Euro with the French team. But before that, on August 9, he will meet his future ex-teammates from Bourges XV during a joint training session with USON. After playing four Fédérale 2 matches this season with his training club, it is not excluded that he will do some stints next year with BXV via a dual license.
