Police reinforcements have already led to the arrest of more than 300 people on the Marseille coast since June 1.

Noise pollution, theft, and even assaults: these offences are reported every summer on the beaches and coastline of Bouches-du-Rhône. As a result, the national and municipal police are increasing their numbers from 1 June to 1 September. In Marseille, around a hundred police officers are coming to reinforce the coastline.

“It’s a system with police officers in transport, police mountain bikers, and plainclothes personnel to carry out arrests in the act,” explains Pierre-Edouard Colliex, police prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône, on a trip to Marseille on Tuesday July 9.

Already more than 300 arrests

And the system is already bearing fruit. “Just yesterday and the day before yesterday, we had Italian tourists who had been robbed on the beach (…), (the perpetrators) were arrested, we were able to return their belongings to these tourists,” the prefect rejoices.

These reinforcements are all the more necessary this summer with the organization of several Olympic Games events in Marseille and the expected arrival of more than 500,000 visitors.

Since June 1, 308 arrests have been made as part of this system on the Marseille coast.
