Although puffs are not yet subject to tobacco tax, a 20-year-old Frenchman was recently fined for importing commercial goods in tourist traffic. He also had to pay VAT following the discovery of nearly 466 puffs with 2% nicotine. The man was checked on 2 July by employees of the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (FODF) at the Saint-Gingolph (VS) customs post as he was leaving Switzerland with a 19-year-old companion.

“The driver explained that he had previously sold 160 disposable e-cigarettes in a fast food restaurant in the canton of Valais,” explains Donatella Del Vecchio, spokesperson for the OFDF. He was fined for violating the Customs Act and the VAT Act. He was able to get his goods back after paying the fee and fine due for several hundred francs. The OFDF specifies that puffs will be subject to tobacco tax from this autumn in Switzerland.
