The Porte-de-Paris nursery school will not have its pupils back at school in September 2024. For six months, it will be the subject of a construction project, with the return of pupils and staff planned for the start of the February 2025 holidays. “Over the past year, the city has already replaced the windows there, explains Rafael Dos Santos, municipal councilor responsible for school facilities. The dilapidated roof was also already included in the work to be planned, but the decision was accelerated following an episode of very heavy rain at the end of 2022, which caused damage.

“A new school from an energy point of view”

Rather than an intervention only concerning the roof, the City has chosen to plan a larger project in order to reach a certain energy standard, and thus benefit from State aid to finance the work. “In addition to the roof insulation, it was decided to reduce the ceiling height with false ceilings and reinforced insulation, as well as insulation between the cellar and the classrooms. If we add the new windows, this is equivalent to a new school from an energy point of view.”underlines the municipal councilor. The investment reaches a sum of €550,000, of which €113,750 will be financed by the State Green Fund.

“We are turning a problem, with this roof, into an opportunity to receive aid and obtain a school that does not consume a lot of energy”continues Rafael Dos Santos, specifying that the work will also include the installation of a PPMS alarm (special security plan), in the event of intrusion or major risk.

Schoolchildren displaced in Montmidi

The presence of asbestos in the roof requires the work to be carried out on an empty site, and the scale of the project means that it cannot be completed in just two months of summer vacation. The decision was therefore made to begin work in September, starting with the roof.

One option could have been to install the classes in modular buildings, which would have been placed in the parking lot of Intendant-le-Nain. In order to save the cost of this temporary rental, and after discussions with the parents of the students, the City preferred to move the classes to another nursery school, which had just been vacated: the one in Montmidi, rue Paul-Langevin. These premises will in fact be returned in July, after the move to the brand new Montmidi school, made of wood and straw, built in Montgorges.

The children of the three classes of the Porte-de-Paris nursery school will therefore take a bus every day, to go to and from Montmidi. The bus will stop near the Porte-de-Paris, and will also serve the Scène Maria-Casarès since it is in a space of this performance hall, located next to the Le Dietrich cinema, that the City will organize the morning and evening after-school activities.
