The Observatory of Inequalities has just unveiled its 2024-2025 report on poverty in France. At the same time, it details the figures for the departments. In Finistère, large cities, but also rural communities far from the coast, are the areas most affected by poverty.
Five cities with a poverty rate above 15%
Five of them have a poverty rate (1) greater than 15%: Brest (19%), Morlaix (19%), Plonévez-du-Faou (17%), Carhaix-Plouguer (16%) and Châteauneuf-du-Faou (16%). Below are the municipalities of Finistère most affected by this phenomenon.
To establish this ranking, the Observatory of Inequalities relied on data from INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). The smallest municipalities are therefore not affected.

In detail for Finistère, 47 localities in this classification have a poverty rate greater than 10%.
Brittany less affected by poverty
But the department, like the rest of Brittany, is much less affected by this phenomenon than other regions. “In Pays de la Loire and Brittany, “only” 11% of the population is in this situation” of poverty, specifies the Observatory of Inequalities, in its report. Or the lowest regional poverty rates in the country.
“The poverty rate varies from one to three times in France, depending on the region: from 11% in Pays de la Loire to 36% in Reunion, at the poverty threshold of 60% of the median standard of living, according to 2021 data of INSEE. On average, the country's poverty rate is 15%. it is specified.
