The Gendarmerie du Lot is mobilizing exceptional resources to secure the 12th stage of the Tour de France, crossing the department over 127 km, in order to ensure the safety of riders and spectators.

Don’t worry, for the gendarmerie of Lot, the Tour de France, it’s going to roll. Expected in the department, this Thursday, for the 12th stage, the riders will cross our department from one side to the other on the Sousceyrac-en-Quercy / Saint-Martin-le-Redon section.

“A 127 km route on which the Lot Gendarmerie Group will ensure the security of the caravan and the race, as well as the safety of the spectators”, announced Colonel Loddé, while specifying that it is the Republican Guard which will supervise the safety of the cyclists.

More than 600 gendarmes are deployed at 300 fixed posts and along the race route.

160 vehicles in the Tour de France advertising caravan

For the caravan alone, 160 vehicles and around 600 people are expected. “This is the only event in France where the roads are privatized by the organizer ASO, from the beginning to the end of the race,” notes the group’s commander.

In order to ensure the smooth running of this sporting and popular event, it mobilized 120 gendarmes from the active units of Lot and nearly 80 reservists. In addition, there were 160 student gendarmes from the Tulle school and around fifty personnel from the mobile gendarmerie squadron and a helicopter from the national gendarmerie. “The Tour de France also called on the GIGN, the motorcycle squadron of the Republican Guard, but also the Army Information and Public Relations Service (SIRPA)”, mentions the head of the Lot gendarmes.

What are the sensitive axes and strategic points?

At around 11:34 a.m., the Tour’s advertising caravan will enter the Lot, for an announced passage in Sousceyrac at around 11:42 a.m. At 2:37 p.m., it will leave our territory to enter Lot-et-Garonne (Fumel). “On this route, we will have 300 posts with gendarmes positioned at the main crossroads and on sensitive roads,” reports Captain Maxime Kson, commander of the departmental road safety squadron.

For him, it is crucial to strengthen their presence at strategic points of the race, where spectators will gather in large numbers. This is the case on the Autoire, Rocamadour and Montcléra slopes. But also in the sprint zone at Gourdon. “These will be our points of attention,” he lists.

The strategy for maintaining public order

If necessary, the Gendarmerie is able to call on units based in the intervention reserve such as the PSIG. “To prevent disturbances to public order, officers of the Judicial Police (PJ) will also be posted in plain clothes, here and there,” warns Commander Loddé.

Other sites mobilize the gendarmes on the Tour de France: the famous shear points between two roads. “Saint-Céré, Rocamadour, Saint-Projet, Gourdon, Frayssinet-le-Gélat, Montcabrier are some of them. It will be forbidden to cross the race axis, one hour before the passage of the caravan and until the end-of-race car (15 to 30 minutes after the riders) has closed the passage. On order, in case of emergency, for medical and emergency vehicles, a crossing may be made.”

The main concern remains the behaviour of spectators

Everything has therefore been anticipated to prevent any accidents, but the gendarmes of the Lot do not forget that the main danger remains the behavior of the spectators. From 8 am, the first patrols will therefore be on the lookout on the race axis, to move aside or remove vehicles or installations, while waiting for the gendarmes to position themselves at their posts from 10 am. Well before number 11, Tadej Pogacar and the Tour de France peloton hit our roads.
