Ligue 1 matches not broadcast? Caillot opens the door to this crazy scenario

What if the 2024-2025 Ligue 1 season started with a black screen or no screen? Unthinkable just a few weeks ago, this scenario now seems possible. Still without a broadcaster for the 2024-2029 period, the elite of French football could well experience several championship days without a match on television. At least if we are to believe the comments made this Monday by Jean-Pierre Caillot during an interview with the newspaper L’Equipe while the season is due to start on the weekend of August 17 and 18.

“If we have to resume the season without a channel, for one or two days, we will accept it,” assured the president of Stade de Reims and the Ligue 1 college. “People will go to the stadium to watch the matches. And we will be patient.”

DAZN’s offer failed to convince clubs

Since the crisis linked to the withdrawal of Mediapro, the LFP has been going through a period of turbulence regarding TV rights. Historical broadcaster of French football, Canal+ did not wish to make an offer for the period 2024-2029. Despite the recent acquisition of the rights to Ligue 2, the beIN Sports channel has not concretely positioned itself on Ligue 1 even if the president Caillot still seems to want to believe in it before the start of the season in mid-August and knows that “beIN is interested in the product” despite its lack of a concrete offer.

At this point, two firm offers are on the table from the League led by Vincent Labrune and the clubs. On the one hand, DAZN and its 375 million euros offered for eight matches and on the other, the creation of a 100% L1 channel by the LFP via a partnership with the “Max” platform of Warner Bros Discovery. Two proposals that have not yet convinced the leaders of the clubs and those of the League.

According to Jean-Pierre Caillot, the DAZN option is even “far” from convincing. Scalded by the Mediapro failure, the clubs want greater guarantees from the British streaming platform.

Caillot considers the 100% L1 channel as “a good product”

In the absence of an agreement with a traditional broadcaster, Jean-Pierre Caillot has therefore opened the door to not broadcasting the first days of the 2024-2025 season. An option that could also coincide with the launch of the 100% L1 channel that the LFP teams are working on. But as the president of Reims reminded the newspaper L’Equipe, such a project would take time to bear fruit while several clubs have financial worries.

“In the current system, there is no fixed amount. The clubs have cash flow problems and they need a fixed amount,” the president of the Ligue 1 college further stressed. “With the channel, it will take a little time for it to bring in resources.”

Still in the dark, the clubs must still meet on Thursday at a summit meeting. Perhaps the opportunity for them to decide definitively, or at least to favor one option among those that exist… or will exist by then.
