Israeli strikes in Lebanon kill nine people
Nine people were killed on Monday December 2 in Israeli strikes on villages in southern Lebanon. This comes after an attack by Hezbollah towards a contested area on the borders of Lebanon and the part of the Syrian Golan occupied and annexed by Israel, the first since the ceasefire came into force. The United States, the Jewish state's main ally, affirms that the truce in force since November 27 was holding and that they were examining the accusations from both camps.
Calls for de-escalation in the face of rebel offensive in Syria
Calls for de-escalation increased Monday in the face of the meteoric offensive by rebels who have seized large areas of northern Syria, raising fears of a resumption of large-scale fighting after more than a decade of civil war. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “alarmed by the recent escalation of violence” and called for a “immediate cessation of hostilities”. Washington urged “all countries” to work for a “de-escalation”just like the European Union which has “sentenced” Russian strikes “in densely populated areas”.

Murders in Isère in 1988 and 2000: the suspect indicted
A man suspected of the murder of a 15-year-old girl in 1988 and that of a 40-year-old woman in 2000 in Isère was indicted and placed in pre-trial detention on Monday, said the Nanterre prosecutor's office. This man in his sixties was arrested and taken into police custody last week in the premises of the Grenoble research section gendarmes after being identified by his DNA. Nathalie Boyer is one of the victims of the “disappeared from Isère” file which concerns nine disappearances or murders of children in the department between 1983 and 1996.
A drawing of Rimbaud by Verlaine sold for 585,000 euros
A portrait of Arthur Rimbaud drawn by his lover, Paul Verlaine, was sold at auction on Monday for 585,000 euros, a price much higher than initial estimates, announced the Drouot auction house. This pen and brown ink drawing bears the date “June 1872”, but Verlaine indicates that it represents the adolescent “from memory”at a time which is therefore not certain. The young poet, 17 years old, is shown in profile, lanky figure, long hair in a hat, hands in his pockets and smoking a pipe. In total, we only know of six authenticated photos of him.
