Sadness and call for action following the migration tragedy off the coast of Mauritania

The pirogue, which left from the Senegalese-Gambian border, was carrying 170 passengers, including men, women and children, all seeking to escape poverty and find a better future. This tragedy highlights the desperation that drives many Senegalese to risk their lives at sea, for the hope of a more dignified life.

Amadou Bâ thanked the Mauritanian coastguard for their courageous intervention, which allowed the rescue of nine survivors, including a five-year-old girl, and the recovery of the bodies of the victims. He stressed the importance of recognizing the dangers of irregular migration and called for the creation of more dignified living conditions and economic opportunities in Senegal.

This tragedy cruelly reminds us of the dangers of irregular migration and the inhumane conditions faced by those who choose this desperate path.“, Ba said. He called for a renewed commitment to building a Senegal where everyone can hope to prosper, stressing the need to join forces to change this grim reality.

To the bereaved families, Amadou Bâ extended his most sincere condolences, hoping that his prayers and support would bring comfort in these moments of mourning. He concluded by calling for collective awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future and strengthen support structures for vulnerable youth and families.
