Tensions At Northern Border: France Sends General To Oversee Ceasefire

Lebanese sources reported Monday the death of one person in a strike against a motorcycle in the Marjayoun region, while announced the dispatch of a general and a special team to establish a monitoring mechanism ceasefire violations on the northern border. According to reports, the French general is expected to arrive in Beirut today, and the committee he will chair will begin its activities in the coming hours. Lebanese Amal Movement MP Kassem Hachem said in an interview that “Lebanon is committed to the ceasefire and the monitoring committee must meet to end Israeli violations.”

Lebanon has reported three airstrikes in the south of the country since this morning, including one against a motorcycle in Marjayoun which reportedly left one person dead, identified as belonging to the Lebanese security forces. The IDF stressed that “the strikes were carried out within the framework of the implementation of the regulatory agreement” and added that a warning shot was carried out in the direction of Lebanese who were approaching the border area.

Furthermore, the activity of Israeli drones above Beirut in recent days has angered France. The issue was raised in discussions between senior French and Israeli officials, as well as between American officials and their Israeli counterparts. American mediator Amos Hochstein sent a message to the Israelis: “There are Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement.” At the same time, the Lebanese army is preparing a significant deployment in the south of the country. According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, it plans to deploy 6,000 soldiers south of the Litani River to strengthen control of this sensitive area.

A French diplomatic source stressed earlier that “we have warned both parties against actions that would endanger the implementation of the ceasefire agreement”, adding that remains “committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that this arrangement is fully implemented and enforced.”
