Football fans were out in force at the fan zone on Saturday for the Switzerland-England match. Even the rain didn’t discourage the most assiduous. The disappointment was as great as the expectations.

The hopes of the Swiss fans are dashed in an instant: At England’s fifth penalty shootout, it’s a disaster. The team with the three lions goes clean and punishes Akanji’s first missed shot: they qualify for the semi-finals and leave the Nati on the floor.

Barely after the last goal had been conceded, the supporters left the Plaine de Plainpalais. “We believed in it until the end! Unfortunately it got stuck on penalties. After France in 2021, we didn’t manage to repeat the feat,” laments one. “We’re still disappointed, we didn’t do badly. But we had a great Euro,” consoles another fan.

A start to the match full of hope

At the start of the match, however, everyone wanted to believe it: “I think Switzerland will win hands down” predicted one supporter. “Switzerland always surprises and this time, I think we will go far” rejoiced another. “I think it will be 1-0 for Switzerland, but really in the last 10 minutes, in extremis” tempered another.

“If we make it 1-0, that would already be good.”

At half-time, the score is 0-0. Some are already foreseeing a potential defeat, after a first part that did not leave any real opportunity for the Nati: “If we make it 1-0 that would already be good” notes a spectator, pragmatically. Another already sees the Swiss in the penalty shootout. A young woman is even more pessimistic: “If I had to make a prediction, I would say 1-0 for England. Even if I am for Switzerland!” she proclaims, showing her flag tied around her shoulders.

When the rain comes to spoil the party, some leave the Plain, but many decide to stay.

Finally at 75e minute, Switzerland opens the score, the fan zone is in turmoil. But five minutes later, it’s already back to reality: England equalizes. The score stays there, we move on to extra time. At the 109e minute Shaqiri enters the pitch, cheered by the fans. It will not be enough for Switzerland to snatch victory, the fans had to take shelter to dry their clothes and their tears.
