The media-savvy two-time presidential candidate, who narrowly qualified for the second round, will not return to the Assembly. In a three-way race, he was beaten by the outgoing deputy, the socialist Iñaki Echaniz, and the RN in the 4th constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Jean Lassalle’s comeback failed. The former Modem MP, who was trying to return to the Assembly after saying goodbye to it in 2022, was defeated in the 4th constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Having narrowly qualified for the second round, in third place – he had obtained 18.1% of the vote but 12.91% of registered voters, just above the limit – the double presidential candidate was beaten by the socialist Iñaki Echaniz, nominated by the New Popular Front, who won 47.92%. The RN Sylviane Lopez, 28.92%, finished second. Lassalle failed in third place with 23.16%.

The founder of Résistons! had decided to stay in office despite the weakness of his score – which he himself had described as “solid jerk” – and the general call for the republican barrier. Jean Lassalle thus ensured that its maintenance ensured “the RN’s inability to win” and would avoid “the victory of Mélenchon’s candidate [sic]». For his part, the outgoing deputy Iñaki Echaniz judged his predecessor’s approach with severity: “I find it dangerous in this national and local context. He is taking a risk in letting the National Rally take the lead.”

Weakened after open heart surgery, Jean Lassalle had passed his turn in 2022, arguing that “the national situation”despite an honourable score in the presidential election (3%, triple his score in 2017). His brother Julien, a farmer, had tried to take over from him but had failed in the first round, with 20.27% of the vote, leaving the way open to Iñaki Echaniz, elected by a hair’s breadth ahead of Annick Trounday, the candidate of the presidential majority, who had not presented a candidate on 30 June.

Benefiting from fairly positive media coverage, Jean Lassalle was running after having been the head of the Rural Alliance list in the European elections (2.35% of the vote, including solid scores in certain rural areas). A former ally of François Bayrou, he had voted blank in the second round of the 2022 presidential election between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen. During the campaign for these legislative elections, his RN opponent Sylviane Lopez had invited him to a rapprochement because “He has ideas that are a bit similar to ours.”Jean Lassalle was also the subject of a preliminary investigation for rape and sexual assault from June 2023 to March 2024, which was closed without further action.

As soon as they are published by the Ministry of the Interior in the evening, find all the results by constituency of the second round of the 2024 legislative elections on the site of Release.
