Navarro creates surprise by eliminating Gauff in the round of 16

Seeded number 19 at Wimbledon, Emma Navarro reached the quarter-finals of the tournament thanks to a two-set victory over her compatriot Coco Gauff, world number 2.

The Wimbledon round of 16 is a glass ceiling for Coco Gauff. After failing at this stage of the competition in 2019 and then in 2021, the American once again left the London grass at the start of the second week. The fault of a defeat in two sets against her compatriot Emma Navarro, seeded number 19. The two players were initially able to show solid service but that only lasted for a while. Coco Gauff was the first to exploit a weakness in her opponent’s game in order to take her serve and lead three games to two. Nevertheless, Emma Navarro had the resources to respond instantly to restore the status quo. In the process, it was the world number 2 who had two opportunities to regain control on the scoreboard, without success.

Navarro didn’t spoil anything

This weighed in the final straight of the first set since it was the world number 17 who managed to make the difference. On the second set point on Coco Gauff’s serve, Emma Navarro took the lead in this match. The second set turned on a single point. Indeed, as at the start of the match, neither player was able to put the other in difficulty on serve. However, in the fourth game, it was the tournament’s number 19 seed who forced her opponent to make a mistake. On the very first and ultimately the only break point of the set, Emma Navarro moved ahead on the score and never let go of the lead. The games went by without the one who was serving struggling to win her serve. However, the New York native had to try three times to end the match (6-4, 6-3 in 1h16′) and reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in her second participation. She will meet Jasmine Paolini there, who qualified earlier this Sunday.
