Several hundred people from Toulouse gathered at Jean-Jaurès this Sunday evening following the results of the legislative elections.

Smiles, shouts of joy, dance steps: the atmosphere was festive this Sunday at Jean-Jaurès from 8:30 p.m. 500 people gathered according to our sources. The gathering, initially anti-far right, took on the air of a celebration of the results of the legislative elections, which put the New Popular Front in the lead.

“We won, we won,” sang the protesters, sometimes accompanied by lthe horns of passing cars. “It’s good to see people coming together,” says Kosma, who we met on site. “The results give us hope for renewal. We have to celebrate victories, and this is one.” Around 9 p.m., a speaker was even turned on to get the atmosphere going. “It was important to come together, for better or for worse,” explains Coralie.

Maxime, another protester, wants to “qualify” the results. “The worst has not happened, but the victory is not complete,” he explains. “I was very worried and quite defeatist. We would have come regardless of the result, because If you’re going to be sad, you might as well be sad together. In the end, it’s the opposite, we’re happy, so we might as well celebrate together.”

Despite the general joy, the gathering was banned by the prefecture, following a decree dated July 5. A major security system was also put in place. With around fifteen police vans spread across Place Wilson, the Strasbourg Boulevard and the boulevard Lazarre-Carnot. Around 10 p.m., the place emptied peacefully.
