This July 6 marks a historic turning point for the Sahel region. Meeting in Niamey, capital of Niger, the leaders of the three countries of the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) decided to take a new step in their rapprochement by creating the Confederation of Sahel States. Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso will thus push their alliance beyond security cooperation, to achieve true economic, political and cultural integration.

As luck would have it, this announcement was made the day after the holding of the seventh edition of the “Morocco Today Forum” (MTF), under the theme “Vision of a King: Atlantic Africa, for an integrated, inclusive and prosperous continental region”. This meeting, organized by the Le Matin group in Dakhla, saw the participation of leaders of the Sahel countries, who presented their proposals to concretize this Royal strategy.

If there is one thing to remember from this meeting, it is the recognition of these countries towards Morocco. As explained by Colonel-Major Salissou Mahaman Salissou, Minister of Transport and Equipment of the Republic of Niger, in his speech, while ECOWAS and a large part of the international community decided, following the regime changes in these three countries, to isolate them and impose sanctions on them, Morocco supported them and offered them a way out.

Now, this new confederation should make it possible to accelerate this alliance for the Atlantic, by offering the Kingdom the possibility of negotiating with a homogeneous bloc and proposing an integrated and complementary strategy and investments. In addition, now that the divorce is consummated between ECOWAS and the three Sahel States, our country will be able to play the role of transmission belt between the two blocs, knowing that it is a candidate for membership in the West African intergovernmental organization.

It is in difficult times that we recognize our friends. While some countries have taken advantage of the situation to blackmail or adopt a hostile posture, Morocco has proposed to the Sahel countries a project for the future, peace and prosperity. With mutual trust established, all that remains is to move forward in the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic.
