Early legislative elections in Seine-Saint-Denis: all the issues of the second round this Sunday

Last Sunday, six outgoing deputies from Seine-Saint-Denis invested in the name of the New Popular Front (NFP) were re-elected in the first round of the early legislative elections thanks to a sharp increase in turnout. And despite the dissidence, the prospect of a new “strike” for the coalition bringing together in the department La France Insoumise, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party seems more than realistic on the eve of the second round organized this July 7.

Two of the six constituencies whose representative to the National Assembly has not yet been designated are the scene of a duel on the left. In the other four, the NFP candidates are in a (very) favorable position against opponents from the National Rally or the UDI.

On the evening of June 30, only one three-way race was possible in the department, in the 5th constituency (Bobigny, Drancy, Le Bourget). The withdrawal of the candidacy of Raquel Garrido (LFI), who came in third place with 23.65% of the votes cast, put an end to this hypothesis. Only Aly Diouara (La Seine-Saint-Denis au cœur), a political and community activist from La Courneuve invested by France Insoumise in place of the outgoing MP, and the mayor of Drancy Aude Lagarde (UDI) will face each other at the polls this Sunday.

Two “fratricidal duels” on the left

Like Raquel Garrido, her husband Alexis Corbière (LFI) was deprived of the investiture he requested because of his criticism of the functioning of his political movement. Like her, he ran as a dissident in the 7th constituency (Montreuil, Bagnolet) where he has been the outgoing MP since 2017. He managed to come out on top last Sunday ahead of Sabrina Ali Benali (LFI), the official candidate of the NFP (40.19% against 36.38%). The latter refused to withdraw from this “fratricidal duel” on the left.

The same will happen in the 4th constituency (Le Blanc-Mesnil, La Courneuve, Stains, Dugny), where Mohamed Awad (LFI) has decided to remain in the second round against the outgoing MP Soumya Bourouaha (PCF). Invested on behalf of the NFP, the latter has distanced her competitor by more than 7,000 votes, whom France Insoumise invested at the last minute in retaliation for the support of the communist mayors of Montreuil and Bobigny for the dissidents Raquel Garrido and Alexis Corbière.

In the 3rd (Gournay-sur-Marne, Neuilly-Plaisance, Neuilly-sur-Marne, Noisy-le-Grand), 8th (Gagny, Rosny-sous-Bois, Villemomble) and 12th constituencies (Clichy-sous-Bois, Coubron, Livry-Gargan, Montfermeil, Le Raincy, Vaujours), the outgoing deputies will face RN candidates on Sunday who received between 21 and 26% of the votes cast in the first round.

As a reminder, polling stations open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. in Seine-Saint-Denis.
